At Bright Night Gin, we’ve always been passionate about celebrating the best of Tasmania. From the botanicals we use to the breathtaking landscapes that inspire our gins, we’re committed to showcasing and preserving the natural beauty of our island home. That’s why we’re incredibly excited to announce our new partnership with Friends of Burnie Penguins, a conservation group dedicated to protecting the Little Penguins of Burnie, Tasmania.

This partnership is especially close to our hearts because Burnie is not only home to these adorable little birds, but it’s also where we source the Murtis berries (also called Tassie berries) that give our award-winning Pink Gin its signature flavor. By joining forces with Friends of Burnie Penguins, we’re able to give back to the community and help protect one of Tasmania’s most beloved species, all while continuing to craft the gin you love.

Who Are the Friends of Burnie Penguins?

Friends of Burnie Penguins is a dedicated group of conservation volunteers who work tirelessly to protect the Little Penguins, also known as Fairy Penguins. These tiny penguins are the smallest species of penguin in the world, standing just over a foot tall. They may be small, but they have big personalities and are an important part of Tasmania’s coastal ecosystem.

The group provides free interpretative guided experiences to visitors who want to observe these penguins up close. The penguin colony is located along the Burnie foreshore, just a short walk from the city center. It’s one of the few places in Tasmania where you can watch these adorable penguins in their natural habitat, all while learning about their fascinating life cycle from knowledgeable volunteer guides.

Whether you’re visiting to watch penguin courtship rituals, observing chicks in their burrows, or learning about the moulting process at the end of the breeding season, Friends of Burnie Penguins offer a unique and intimate glimpse into the lives of these fascinating birds.

The Importance of Penguin Conservation in Burnie

Little Penguins are a treasured species in Tasmania, but they face a range of threats, both natural and human-made. Coastal development, predation by feral animals, and disturbances from tourism can all negatively impact penguin colonies. Friends of Burnie Penguins is committed to mitigating these threats through education, conservation efforts, and the protection of their habitat along the Burnie foreshore.

Volunteers work year-round to monitor penguin populations, ensure the colony remains safe from predators, and educate visitors on how to observe the penguins respectfully. The group is also involved in habitat restoration, working to preserve and improve the areas where the penguins nest and raise their young.

A Shared Connection: Murtis Berries and Our Pink Gin

What makes this partnership particularly special for us is that Burnie isn’t just home to the Little Penguins—it’s also the region where we source our Murtis berries for our Pink Gin. These native Tasmanian berries play a key role in the fruity, vibrant flavor of our gin, imparting a natural sweetness and tartness that sets it apart from other pink gins on the market.

The connection between our Pink Gin and the Burnie region runs deep. Just as the penguins thrive in the natural beauty of Tasmania’s coast, our Murtis berries grow in this unique environment, soaking up the same cool coastal air and rich Tasmanian soil. By partnering with Friends of Burnie Penguins, we’re not only supporting the local community but also contributing to the preservation of the land that makes our Pink Gin so special.

How You Can Help: Proceeds from Our Pink Gin

We’re proud to announce that proceeds from sales of our Bright Night Pink Gin will go directly to the Friends of Burnie Penguins conservation efforts. With every bottle of Pink Gin you purchase, you’ll be supporting the work of these incredible volunteers who are dedicated to protecting the Little Penguins of Burnie.

This means that not only can you enjoy a glass of Tasmania’s Best Pink Gin, but you’ll also be contributing to a cause that helps safeguard the future of Tasmania’s Little Penguins. It’s a win-win situation: you get to savor the refreshing taste of our Award-winning gin, and together, we can make a difference in protecting one of Tasmania’s most charming species.

Visiting the Burnie Penguins

If you’re ever in Tasmania, we highly recommend visiting the penguin colony in Burnie. It’s a truly unforgettable experience, and thanks to the Friends of Burnie Penguins, you’ll get a guided tour that’s both informative and enjoyable.

The penguin viewing area is located along the Burnie boardwalk, just a short distance from the city center. It’s wheelchair accessible and family-friendly, making it a great activity for people of all ages. As dusk approaches, the Little Penguins return from their day at sea to rest in their burrows. This is when the volunteers lead guided tours, sharing fascinating insights about penguin behavior, courtship, chick-rearing, and moulting.

You’ll have the opportunity to watch the penguins go about their evening routine—without disturbing them. Photography is allowed, but flash photography is strictly prohibited to ensure the penguins are not stressed by bright lights. Make sure to dress warmly, as the viewing area is exposed to the elements, and Tasmanian evenings can be chilly even in the summer.

Why Penguin Conservation Matters

Penguin colonies are not only a beloved part of Tasmania’s wildlife, but they’re also important indicators of the health of our coastal ecosystems. Protecting the Little Penguins helps ensure the preservation of the broader marine environment, which in turn supports countless other species and contributes to the overall health of our planet.

By supporting the Friends of Burnie Penguins, we’re contributing to efforts that go beyond just one species. We’re helping to protect the coastal habitat that so many animals call home, and we’re educating visitors on the importance of conservation. In doing so, we hope to inspire others to take action and make choices that positively impact the environment.
