Best Contemporary Gin in Australia – Sydney Royal Awards

We’re incredibly excited to share some news that has truly made our year. At this year’s Sydney Royal Spirit Awards, Bright Night Gin made its debut… and what a debut it was.

For the first time, we entered our gins into the prestigious Royal Sydney competition, and we are honoured to announce that we came home with four major awards, including one of the most coveted trophies in the entire show.

Here’s what we were proudly awarded:

It’s the kind of result we dreamed about when Bright Night Gin first began; and now, to see it unfold on a national stage, is both humbling and exhilarating.

A Champion Win in the Most Competitive Class

The highlight of the awards, without a doubt, was our Wild Tasmanian Gin winning the Champion Trophy for Contemporary Gin.

This wasn’t just any category. This was the largest and most competitive class in the entire show, featuring around 40 modern Australian gins, each crafted by distillers pushing creativity and innovation in every direction.

To win the top prize in that field is extraordinary, and for us, as a small Tasmanian/Victorian distillery competing for the first time, it means everything.

We were also honoured to receive a Gold Medal for the same gin, confirming its quality, character, and ability to stand proudly alongside Australia’s most celebrated spirits.

What the Judges Said: Stuart McGregor’s Remarkable Praise

One of the things that made this award especially meaningful was the recognition from Stuart McGregor, co-founder of Four Pillars, one of Australia’s most influential gin distilleries.

During the announcement, he shared this incredible endorsement of our gin:

“The winner of our contemporary gin class which was the biggest class in the entire show and the most competitive class in the entire show, because everyone is making this modern Australian style of gins. It’s got 14 botanicals, including one called Kunzea, which I had to look up. It’s a stunning, stunning gin, beautiful expression of juniper but also these wonderful predominantly Tasmanian botanicals. I am really thrilled that a very small.. about to become famous I think distillery has won this. And the winner of the Champion Contemporary Gin is Bright Night Wild Tasmanian Gin.”

To hear such high praise from one of the industry’s most respected figures — someone who helped shape Australian gin into what it is today — is an honour we’ll never forget.

Our Wild Tasmanian Gin has always been a love letter to Tasmania: its wild beauty, its clean water, its unique botanicals. To see that recognised so strongly on a national level, especially by someone who understands craft gin so deeply, is beyond rewarding.

Celebrating Our Full Awards Line-Up

Alongside our Champion Trophy win, we’re incredibly proud of how our entire range performed at the show. Each of our core gins received recognition, a feat that signals the depth and consistency of Bright Night Gin’s longevity.

Silver Medal: Chardonnay Barrel Aged Gin

Our smooth, buttery Chardonnay Barrel Aged Gin earned a Silver Medal in the Mature Gin category. Aged in French oak Chardonnay barrels from the Tamar Valley, this gin balances vanilla, caramel, and spice with the aromatic backbone of our Wild Tasmanian base.

It’s a gin that appeals not only to gin lovers, but also to whisky fans who appreciate complexity, warmth, and time-honoured character.

Bronze Medal: Bright Night Pink Gin

Our vibrant Pink Gin, made with Tasmanian murtis berries, continues to shine. It won a Bronze Medal in the Flavoured Gin category, adding to its long history of awards across Australia and New Zealand.

Loved for its balanced flavour, subtle sweetness, and summer-ready colour, the Pink Gin remains a favourite for spritzes, G&Ts, and festive cocktails.

Our First Year Entering the Sydney Royal Awards

While awards aren’t the reason we create gin, entering the Royal Sydney Awards felt like a milestone. It’s one of the most respected competitions in the country, judged by experts who understand flavour, technique, and distilling innovation at the highest level.

To have our very first entry result in a Champion Trophy, multiple medals, and applause from leading spirits professionals is something we’ll always remember.

For a small distillery like ours — handcrafting gin from New Town, Tasmania, staying true to local ingredients, and pouring heart into every batch — it’s an affirmation that passion, place, and purpose matter.

What Makes Wild Tasmanian Gin Special

If you haven’t tried our Champion Gin yet, here’s what makes it stand out.

  • 14 botanicals, including Tasmanian pepperberry, lemon myrtle, and the uniquely local Kunzea, a wildflower native to Tasmania’s coastline.
  • Pure Tasmanian mountain water, giving the gin clarity and softness.
  • A flavour profile that balances juniper with wild, aromatic complexity.
  • A crisp, clean finish perfect for cocktails and sipping alike.

It’s a gin deeply rooted in the landscapes that inspired it: rugged coastlines, mountain air, and the quiet magic of Tasmania’s wilderness.

A Win for Tasmania, A Win for Craft

Tasmania has rapidly become one of Australia’s most exciting regions for spirits; from whisky to gin to botanical liqueurs.

We’re proud to be part of that growing story.

Winning a Champion Trophy at the Sydney Royal Awards isn’t just a Bright Night Gin achievement — it’s a celebration of Tasmanian craft and the passionate community behind it: growers, foragers, distillers, and the gin lovers who support local producers every day.

We have some new things in the mix 🙂

This moment marks the beginning of a very exciting chapter.

With new awards, new recognition, and growing community support, we’re more inspired than ever to keep creating gins that honour Tasmania, challenge expectations, and bring people together.

We have new releases coming soon (an exciting Nepalese Gin), more tasting events across Australia, and some bold plans that we can’t wait to share.

Australia’s Most awarded Gin

Bright Night Gin is quickly becoming recognised as one of Australia’s Most awarded Gins, earning top honours across the country and cementing its place among the nation’s finest spirits. Our recent success at the Sydney Royal Awards marks a defining moment, with our Wild Tasmanian Gin taking home the Champion Trophy for Contemporary Gin in the most competitive class of the entire show. This win, alongside gold for the Wild Tasmanian Gin, silver for our Chardonnay Barrel Aged Gin, and bronze for our Bright Night Pink Gin ( considered as Australia’s best Pink Gin) highlights the strength and consistency of our entire range.
