Wild Tasmanian Gin Tasting

So, you’ve got a bottle of Wild Tasmanian Gin in hand, and you’re ready for the adventure. Buckle up, because we’re about to make your first tasting as easy as a Sunday morning brunch. No fancy jargon or stiff rules – just you, your gin, and the promise of a good time. Let’s dive in!

Gin Tasting Prep

To improve your gin palate, you need to taste the gin by itself. A good gin ought to be able to be appreciated by itself, similar to a good malt whisky. So set aside your mixers and your garnishes for a minute and pour your gin in a tasting glass. If you don’t have a proper tasting glass, any round, thin walled glass will work just fine.

Aroma of the Gin – Nose

Swirl the gin in the glass and gently sniff it. Is it filling your whole nose, or just a part of it? Is it a thin or thick sensation? Keep a note of how pleasant it feels and how inviting it is to take a sip. Bonus points if you can pick up any subtle botanicals at this step.

Taste of the Gin – Palate

Take a sip (but don’t swallow yet) and let the gin rest on your tongue. Keep a note of how the texture feels. Then take a note of the flavours. Can you pick up the individual botanicals or the whole theme (juniper, citrus, floral, herbal, earthy, spicy etc) ? Do the flavours roll across your whole tongue or just parts of it?

Feel of the Gin – Finish

When you drink the gin, how does it feel? Is it a pleasant finish? A long-lasting finish? And what is the aftertaste? A lot of times you can pick up more botanicals in the after-aroma.When you drink the gin, how does it feel? Is it a pleasant finish? A long-lasting finish? And what is the aftertaste?
